Speaking as a former Marine Corps infantryman, this motion picture was groundbreaking in its brutal depiction of combat. Though the screen violence is not as bloody as today’s war films, for 1959 audiences this was pretty strong stuff. It was not a flag waving pean to patriotism, but instead an unvarnished depiction of the reality of the Korean war. Pork Chop Hill’s scenes of combat are indeed quite intense and very disturbing. What makes this movie effective are the unexpected turns of events and the sheer randomness of death. The confusion that is infantry combat isn’t neglected either. In many ways it was the “Saving Private Ryan” of its day. And far better acted too.
