I don’t think you understood the workong of the doomsday device. You suggest it will blow up the world on a few hours. However, it was a cache of cobalt-jacketed nuclear bombs that, when detonated, would produce a cloud of radioactive dust which would eventually, over months, blanket the globe and poison the earth for 100 years. It was the slow drift of the cloud that would give countries time to place large populations in mines. The same form of doom, with no attempt to salvage a remnant, spelled the end of humanity in On The Beach, an unfunny look at nuclear annihilation.

Sellers didn’t play the bomber pilot(Major Kong) because he sprained his ankle getting out of the cockpit mock-up. This is why Dr. Strangelove is in a wheelchair. Another fun tid-bit is that the B-52 interior was apparently so close to the real thing that the Air Force investigated if the film had any untoward access to the bomber’s plans. It turned out they just did an excellent job of parsing together publicly available info from aviation journals.
